Meg tells Vera what Paula Randall said to her. Vera finds Paula and shouts at her. "I said I'm going to fight
and I am. You'll hate the sound of my Doug's name before I'm through with you," shouts Paula. Vera assures Paula
that she isn't taking Doug away from her. "But you've no idea what it's like to be lonely," says Paula. Vera says
she felt sorry for her before but now she knows what she's out to get, she doesn't feel sorry for her anymore.
Lord Lanchester and his valet Billings book into the motel.
David tells Tina Webb that they won't be able to offer her the job as secretary as they are looking for someone with
a little more experience.
Paula Randalls sister, Alma Furness arrives at the motel and Paula introduces her to Vera. "This is Vera.
Doug's fancy woman. She's the one who's trying to ruin our marriage," says Paula.
Meg tells David that she feels sorry for Tina Webb. She suggests they take her on as secretary to help Carole Herwson,
who they have appointed as secretary to replace Faye Mansfield.
Jim Baines threatens to go on strike if the garage staff aren't paid overtime.
Alma Furness asks Vera if she can talk to her privately. Vera says she is a little busy at the moment but asks
her to come to her boat that evening. That evening, Alma goes to see Vera and listens to her side of the story.
Alma says she has had to act as a surrogate mother to Paula since their mother dies when Paula was very young. She promises
to talk to Paula.
Jim Baines and Stan Harvey go to the office and David tells them that he has made a decision on the overtime issue and
they will not be paying overtime. "Right. I warned you we'd take action. We're in dispute," says Jim.
Stan says he doesn't want anything to do with it. "Come on brother," says Jim, and drags Stan out of the office.
Lord Lanchester comes into reception moaning about his boots. "Boots?" asks David. "Yes, boots young fellow.
Why do you have to keep repeating everything I say. It's these boots. I keep tripping over them," says Lord Lanchester.
"What?" asks David. "These ruddy shoe laces," says Lord Lanchester. "Would you allow me to do up your shoe laces
for you?" asks David, and bends down to tie the laces. "Are you left handed or something?" asks Lanchester. "No,
I'm not," says David. "Oh. All my other valets started on the right. Oh well carry on. Do them up
tight lad," says Lord Lanchester.
Carney comes into reception carrying a pot plant. "Oh! Not that tight!" shouts Lanchester. Carney drops
the plant on the floor and stares open-mouthed. "Oh Carne. Well, get my car ready. Don't just
stand there," shouts Lanchester. Carney stands to attention. "Yes sir, my lord," he says and rushes out.
Alma Furness asks Simon Wittaker for the key to her chalet which she is sharing with her sister, Paula Randall.
Simon tells her the key must be in the lock. Alma goes to the chalet to check, comes back and tells Simon that
the chalet door is locked.
A little later Simon speaks to Vera Downend, who is on duty at reception, about Alma Furness and the key to the
chalet. He says he is a little worried about it, and goes off to the chalet to check on Paula Randall. Meanwhile,
David Hunter takes over from Vera on recption duty. Simon Wittaker rushes in. "Mr Hunter, there's been an accident.
It's Mrs Randall. I think she's dead," he says. "Wait here, both of you," says David and rushes out.
Vera tries to telephone Carole Hewson, who she is supposed to be meeting at her boat, to tell her that she will
be late but she cannot contact her. Vera sks Simon to go to the boat and keep Carole company until she can get there.
Later that evening, Vera breaks the news to Alma Furness that Paula Randall tried to kill herself. She assures
her that Paula will be alright.
