Ronald Allen and Sue Lloyd appeared on the Wogan Show prior to their departure from Crossroads in the summer
of 1985.
As Terry Wogan greeted Ronnie and Sue he remarked that neither of them looked as if they were on the breadline yet.
Ronnie quipped that they should have signed on earlier but in fact they didn't, and that he had spent the rest of the
day struggling with a washing machine.
Terry reminded us that between them Sue and Ronnie had spent 20 years in Crossroads, so their recent sacking must
have been a bit of a wrench. "Were you surprised at getting the old elbow?" Terry asked. "Er, yes and no," answered
Ronnie. Ronnie said that he has done enough soap to know that when a new producer takes over, anything can happen, and
that he had worked out all the permutations. "And one of the permutations was that Sue and I could go," said Ronnie.
Sue was asked if she felt bitter about the sacking, to which Sue answered, "Not bitter no. Pretty peeved."
She then added, seriously, that it was a shock to her because she never actually visualised being given the sack.
Terry then asked the couple if they knew how they were going to be written out, to which Ronnie replied that they had
already filmed the sequence. "So how have they killed you off?" asked Terry. "We go off into the sunset hand in
hand," say Ronnie and Sue in unison, as Sue playfully reaches for Ronnie's hand.
Terry then asked Ronnie and Sue whether the public sometimes confused fact and fiction and greeted them in the street
as the Hunters. Both Ronnie and Sue agreed that this happens. Terry goes on to ask Ronnie if the viewers
take him to task over some of the things he has done. "Oh yes, particularly when David Hunter errs and strays from
the straight and narrow towards another woman," says Ronnie. "They like it, there's a sort of gleam in the eye, but
at the same time they're chastising me."
Terry asks Sue and Ronnie if they watch other soaps to which Sue replies that she doesn't, that she is more of a film
buff. "Ronnie's been steeped in soap for...you're a virtual walking babble bath," quips Terry, at which the audience,
Ronnie and Sue laugh.
Terry asks them if they would like to move onto an international soap, perhaps Dallas or Dynasty. "Well, it's funny
you should say that. When the producer was giving us the sack he said 'I think you should go west Ronnie'," laughs Ronnie.
He adds that Philip Bowman was absolutely convinced that he would go down a storm in Dallas or Dynasty. "Apparently
there's a report in one of the daily papers, which I haven't seen, that they're funding me to fly over and talk about the
part that I'm going to play in Dallas or Dynasty." says Ronnie.
Terry mentions that they play husband and wife on screen, so he must ask them the question everyone wants answered.
Sue holds out her left hand, flashing her engagement ring. "So it's going to happen is it? The husband and wife
on screen will turn to reality?" asks Terry. "Yes, eventually. Certainly, if we marry we will certainly marry
one another, that's why we're engaged," says Ronnie.
