His father died when Ronald was twelve. His mother died in 1974. He had four elder sisters; one was
called Doris.
Leighton Park Public School, Reading, Berkshire. An independent, Quaker-run school. Ronald won a grant-assisted
place.
The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. He won the John Gielgud Award for the best pupil in his year.
