Johnny Byrne's shooting script of 'Matter of Life And Death' was accepted on Tuesday, January 8th, 1974 and was quickly pressed into production the following Monday, January 14th, under the control of veteran director, Charles Crichton.  Together with Katzin and Ray Austin, Crichton made up the original trio of directors who were to work on the episodes on a rotational basis.
 
Helena Russell's quarters are seen in this episode and appear later looking totally different in the episode 'Dragon's Domain'. 
 
On Tuesday March 14th , Barry Gray began work on the original music score for 'Matter of Life And Death' with a thirty-two piece orchestra at CTS recording studios in Wembley.
