The second season of UFO was put into production some two years after the first thanks to strong American ratings, then cancelled when the network concerned, CBS, backed out.  Space: 1999 was conceived as a method of salvaging the expensive and extensive pre-production work already carried on the series.  UFO: 1999, already planned to be on a much larger scale than its predecessor had metamorphosised into not only the biggest television production of Gerry Anderson's career but the most expensive series ever produced.
