Background

Despite not being with the project any longer, Christpher Penfold's script 'Dragon's Domain' remained on file.

In the original script Alan Carter would be the commander of the 1996 Ultra Probe, and he, not Koenig, would kill the monster.

With Penfold gone, the script was revised and the Ultra Probe commander became Jim Calder, later changed to Tony Cellini.

The early version of the script also had a character called Olga Vishenskya who was later replaced by Doctor Monique Fauchere.

Johnny Byrne has no recollection of working on the screenplay, and it is thought that Gerry Anderson, Charles Crichton and Martin Landau all had a hand in the rewrite.

The script was completed on January 21st, 1975.

Filming got underway on January 27th.

A couple of Ultra Probe models, measuring six feet and three feet were built with the nosecone of the larger example being to scale with the forty four inch Eagle.

The alien ship containing the monster was a model measuring five feet six inches and this was built along with another couple of vessels to become part of the spaceship graveyard.

For some time, Keith Wilson had been advocating the inclusion of monster stories and finally got his wish to design one.  The monster's arms were made from rubber tubing covered in polystyrene, with open ends so air could be blown down them to give the impression of moving tentacles.

The skulls and bodily remains of the monster's victims were made from Revell model kits available on the market at the time.

The background music used in this episode is Adagio for strings and organ in G Minor composed by Tommaso Albinoni.
