Background

The concept of this episode came from Barbara Bain, after she had suggested an outline to Bob Kellett.

The shooting script entitled 'The Second Sex' arrived in the production office on the 25th October, 1974, and underwent revision work before being resubmitted on the day filming began.

Filming began on 'The Last Enemy' on November 8th, 1974.

During production the title was changed to 'The Other Enemy' and finally to 'The Last Enemy'.

Originally Brian Johnson wanted both the Bethan and Deltan spaceships to be of the same design but different colours.  However, this idea was dropped because at the time most TV sets in the UK were black and white, making the vessels virtually indistinguishable.

The Bethan ship was first painted green, only to be repainted yellow for a series of publicity photographs with the eleven inch Eagle and Hawk over Alpha, before being resprayed back to its original colour.

At the last minute Martin Bower's bomber from 'Alpha Child' and 'War Games' was redetailed to become the Deltan ship.

Although they do not actually appear in the episode, the Alpha laser tanks are seen in the THIS EPISODE teaser of the opening titles.  The laser tanks do appear in the episode 'The Infernal Machine'.

The binoculars used by Koenig were used in UFO.
