Barbara Hunter is alone at the Coach House when she receives a visit from Adam Chance.  Barbara asks Adam if there is a reason why he is here and Adam says he thought she might be lonely.  Barbara tells Adam that she had a massive row with David this afternoon and she said some unforgiveable things to him, and now she wishes she had kept her mouth shut.  She says David has driven straight down to London to see Rosemary and she wouldn't be surprised if she persuaded him to go to Switzerland.

Barbara Hunter tells Adam that David can do what he likes now, in a few weeks she will be in Paris with Jimmy.  Adam asks her why she is so concerned about David, and Barbara says just because she can't live with David it doesn't mean she is completely indifferent to him.  At that moment the door opens and David comes in.  He stands in the doorway staring at Barbara.  Adam says he thought he might be able to help.  "That's very kind, but we're beyond help," says David.  Adam leaves.  Barbara asks David if he saw Rosemary.  "Yes, we had a very frank talk.  Now it's time for me to talk to you," says David.

Diane Hunter see's Meg on reception duty and shows her some paintings which Benny did.  She says Sam Hurst said they were very good.  Meg looks at the paintings andsays she likes them.  She comes across one which she looks at carefully.  "This one isn't Benny's surely," says Meg.  Diane says no, that's Sam Hurst's.  "When I saw that mural on the wall at Stonebank it reminded me of the work of an artist that I saw twenty years ago.  He's that artist," says Meg.  "Wouldn't you have recognised the name?" asks Diane.  "If he hadn't changed it," says Meg.

At the Brownlow's house Glenda Banks answers the phone and calls her mother to the phone.  She tells Kath it's Ron on the phone.  A few minutes later after Kath has finished talking to Ron she puts her coat on and says she is just popping out for a few minutes.

The doorbell rings at Mavis Hooper's house and Mavis answers the door to Kath Brownlow.  Kath goes to Iris Scott's room and Iris hugs her aunt.

"Why did you tell me to ask Rosemary about her first husband?" David asks Barbara.  "What did she say?" asks Barbara.  "She had no idea what you could be talking about," says Barbara.  "And you believed her," says Barbara.  "Shouldn't I?" asks David.  "Then I have nothing more to say about it," says Barbara.  "Oh yes you have.  You couldn't have concocted something so bizarre and you weren't just blurting things out just to hurt me.  It was too specific," says David, going over to pour himself a drink.

"Why?" asks David.  "Whatever my reasons I regret I said anything," says Barbara.  "Why?  Because it was a lie?" asks David.  "No, because I was ashamed about the way I found out about," says Barbara.  "What do you mean?" asks David.  "Oh it was squalid and dishonest," Barbara tells him.  "Go on," says David.  "Some tape recordings of Rosemary's psychotherapy sessions with Lloyd Munro got lost for a while.  I got them from the girl who took them, Iris Scott.  I heard Rosemary telling Lloyd about it, about her first marriage.  The marriage lasted only a few weeks, then he left her.  There was no divorce," says Barbara.  "So Rosemary and I were never legally married.  Chris is illigitimate," says David.

"I understand something of Rosemary's psychological problems.  Poor Rosemary," says David.  Barbara stares at him in disbelief.  "Poor Rosemary.  After what she's done," she says.  "She paid for that wouldn't you say.  Carrying the burden of that knowledge," says David.  "Poor Rosemary," exclaims Barbara.  "Yes, poor Rosemary.  I can forgive her for that.  Besides whatever else she did she is the mother of my son.  She gave me Chris," says David angrily.

"She didn't even do that," says Barbara.  David looks at her.  "What else was on those tapes?" asks David, facing Barbara.  "Was there something about Chris?"  "Ask her," says Barbara, turning away from David.  "I'm asking you!" shouts David, grabbing Barbara roughly by the arms and turning her around to face him.  "You're hurting me," says Barbara.  "What did she say!  What did she say about Chris!" shouts David, .  "That she was already pregnant when she married you.  You're not his father," says Barbara.  David releases her.

David says there is nothing left, gone are his plans to travel, his marriage, his son.  Barbara tells him that he was there when Chris needed him, when Chris needed help he turned to David.  "You are his father," says Barbara.  "Except for one important fact.  That another man gave him his life," says David.  "At least there are no secrets now.  That should be some consolation," says Barbara.  David walks off without a word.

Glenda Banks tells Arthur that she knows her mother has gone to Ron's.  Sge puts on her coat and says she is going round there ot get Kath back.

The doorbell rings at Mavis Hooper's house and Mavis answers the door.  "Is my mother here?" asks Glenda.  She goes into Iris Scott's room and faces Iris.  Glenda  tells Iris to leave Kath alone.  "I don't know what your little game is," says Glenda.  "No games.  This is for real.  I'm going to have a baby.  Ron's baby," says Iris.

Iris Scott puts her arms around Glenda.  "It'll seem cruel.  Please don't cry, not over this," says Iris.  They sit on the bed.  Glenda says it's so unfair, and Iris says she knows.  Glenda asks Iris when the baby is due and Iris tells her the end of April.  Glenda tells Iris that her and Ron will have to find somewhere better to live.  Ron Brownlow arrives and asks what is wrong when he see's that Glenda has been crying.  Iris tells him that Glenda knows about the baby and just came round to congratulate them.  Ron tells Glenda that he will take her home.

At the Brownlow house Kath moans at Arthur for letting Glenda come after her.  Kath says it's no use keeping the baby a secret any longer.  Kath tells Kevin Banks that Iris Scott is expecting a baby.  Kevin says Glenda will be really upset.  They hear the front door bang and Glenda comes into the living room with Ron.  Glenda tells her parents and Kevin that she knows about the baby.  "It's alright," she says.

Jill Harvey and Meg Mortimer talk in the office and Meg tells Jill that Sam Hurst is really a famous artist called Sam Norton.  Jill remembers something about a fire Sam was connected with and Meg tells her that Sam's wife and children were killed in a fire in their home which Sam started accidently.  Meg tells Jill that Sam Hurst is coming to the motel to see her later as there is something important he wanted to discuss.

Adam Chance comes into reception and asks Sharon Metcalfe if fhe would help him to run the motel garage.

Sam Hurst goes to the office and tells Meg that he will be leaving tomorrow.  Meg tells him that he can't keep running away, and anyway he was innocent.  Sam Hurst tells Meg that he wants to start again somewhere else, and suggests the perhaps Meg should do the same.  Meg tells him that she wouldn't know how to, and Sam says she should try before it's too late.  Sam Hurst and Meg shake hands and he wishes her luck as he leaves the office.

David Hunter goes to the office and sits down opposite Meg.  Meg asks him how Rosemary is and David says she is fine.  "And Barbara?" asks Meg.  "Barbara is leaving me tomorrow," says David.  Meg tells David that he should do something positive.  "I have," she says.  "I'm giving up.  You win," says Meg.  Meg tells David that he is right, there is more to life than business.

In the motel grounds the staff and guests enjoy the bonfire and fireworks display.

Meg walks into the motel reception and talks to Adam Chance who is on reception desk duty.  Meg tells him that she knows she is supposed to take over the reception desk but could he hold on for another three quarters of an hour.  She says she must talk to Jill.  Adam asks Meg if she is alright and Meg tells him that she has taken a tranquilliser.

Meg tells Adam that she must see Jill, and Adam tells her that Jill is outside at the firework display.  Meg walks towards the main doors, then turns back to Adam.  "Is David there?" asks Meg, and Adam says yes.  Meg walks back into reception and tells Adam that she will be in the sitting room.  She asks Adam if he could tell Jill when he see's her.  Meg walks towards the door leading to the private wing, then she stops.  She walks back into reception and up to the desk.  She puts her hand on Adam's hand and squeezes it, then walks back towards the private wing.

Adam Chance answers the phone at the reception desk.  Whilst he is talking three young lads come into reception, look around then walk out again.  Once Adam has finished the phone call he looks out of the windows and see's the three lads peering back at him.  He goes into the kitchen.

In her room Meg places an envelope addressed to Jill on the table beside a photo of Sandy.  She sits in an armchair and stares at a bottle of pills.

Adam Chance goes to the bonfire party at the motel and talks to David Hunter.  David tells Adam he saw him running down the drive.  Adam tells him that he was chasing three lads who were hanging around the motel.  David tells Adam that Meg is quitting.  Adam tells David that he saw Meg a little earlier and she was in a very funny mood.  "Well that clears the way," says Adam.  "For what?" asks David.  "For whatever you want," says Adam.
