The film is a parody of Enid Blyton's Famous Five books, in which five children Julian, Dick, George, Anne and their dog Timmy, investigate the disappearance of their Uncle Quentin.

Upon transmission the film attracted controversy among the British press for its treatment of the popular Famous Five books.  There were references to homosexuality, with hints of a relationship between Dick and Julian, as well as references to racist and extreme right-wing views.
