Lieutenant Commander Tom Jeffords, an American Naval Officer serving with the British Navy is assigned to destroy
a German arsenal in Sicily. The ending of World War Two could depend on this mission being successful.
Jeffords reports to the Commanding Officer of the base in Malta, Commander Roger Ashurst, desk-bound, frustrated and
deeply disatisfied because he feels the War is passing him by. Meanwhile, Jeffords embarks on an affair with Ashurst's
wife, Alison, who is responsible for Ashurst being desk-bound.
When Jeffords presents Ashurst with his plan Ashurst voices his objections to the plan, and refuses at first to give
the go-ahead. Later, Tom Jeffords holds a briefing for those involved in the mission, during which Ashurst volunteers
his services.
The mission is successful and as the boats return to base, Commander Ashurst's wife, Alison, waits to see who has returned.
As her husband and lover step off the boats, she embraces her husband, as Jeffords stands watching.
