Filming on this episode began at EMI Elstree Studios, Borehamwood in Hertfordshire on Monday December
3rd 1973. Following threats of closure, filming was re-located to Pinewood Studios, Ivor Heath in Buckinghamshire shortly
after.
Filming ran for twenty five days, with five days off for Christmas and New Year, eventually ending on
January 11th, 1974.
Three additional days filming (February 22nd, 25th and 26th) under Katzin's
direction was arranged.
The episode grew out of an original idea by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson which was entitled 'Zero
G', and which ran for thirty minutes to fit in with the original concept for twety-six half hour adventures.
Taking elements of 'Zero G,' George Bellak wrote a feature length ninety-minute pilot named 'The Void
Ahead'.
Christopher Penfold rewrote Bellak's pilot script 'The Void Ahead', shortening it to sixty minutes and
renaming it 'Turning Point'. Despite the large amount of work
put in by Penfold, the episode is credited solely to George Bellak.
The design and construction of Nuclear Disposal Area 2 was by Mike Trim,
a long-time associate of Anderson, and would be his only contribution to the series.
The character Ouma, played by Lon Satton, only appeared in this episode. He was intended to be
a regular but his inability to get along with the rest of the cast prompted his dismissal. His place would be taken
by Clifton Jones as David Kano.
