Background

Even with a budget increased to £160,000 per episode (from £125,000 per episode for the first season), the cost of inflation, the consequent price increases for all materials, and the government sanctioned wage increases negotiated by the unions all combined to deny the second season of 'Space: 1999' the same kind of production values that had been lavished on the earlier episodes.

Juggling cost savings against loss of quality was a constant headache for Anderson and Freiberger, so the development of 'The Bringers Of Wonder' as a two-part story came as a great relief.

Although it was still necessary to film two complete fifty-minute episodes, 'The Bringers Of Wonder' enabled the rpoducers to make massive savings as the cost of new sets, costumes and guest performers could be spread across both parts.  In turn, this enabled more money to be spent on the story as a whole, giving 'The Bringers of Wonder' a more opulent appearance then many other Year Two episodes, with no fewer than 20 speaking roles and eight completely new monster costumes for the Plasma Aliens.

The two episodes that followed 'The Bringers Of Wonder' into production, 'The Lambda Factor' and 'The Seance Spectre', look cheap in comparison, even though each episode cost more to produce than either one of the two 'Two Bringers Of Wonder' episodes.

A further example of the producers' cost-saving efforts, 'The Lambda Factor' and 'The Seance Spectre' were both 'bottle' shows, an industry term used to describe episodes filmed almost entirely on the series' standing sets, avoiding the expense of constructing new sets specifically for these episodes.
