Background
As each 'Space: 1999' episode required between ten and thirteen days of principal photography,
the full season of 24 episodes could not be filmed in anything less than 50 weeks, and even this schedule would not allow
for episodes overrunning or holiday breaks for the regular cast. A further three months would be required for post-production
work before the episodes were ready for transmission. However, ITC insisted that a sufficient number of episodes should
be completed in order to allow the series to begin screening in September 1976.
In order to resolve the problem, certain episodes were filmed simultaneously so that two episodes
were in production during the same ten day shooting schedule. Known as 'double-up' episodes, these were engineered to
heavily feature Martin Landau in one while Barbara Bain featured in the other, with the remaining members of the cast split
between the two. Barbara Bain's episode would be primarily filmed on the Moonbase Alpha sets on Pinewood Studios'
L Stage, while the Martin Landau episode would be shot almost entirely on location or on new 'alien world' sets constructed
on M Stage.
Eight episodes were filmed in this way, effectively reducing the series' shooting schedule
by over 40 days. The first pair of 'double-up' episodes to be shot were 'The Rules of Luton' and 'The Mark of Archanon',
the former featuring Martin Landau and Catherine Schell on location in Black Park, Buckinghamshire while the latter was filmed
with Barbara Bain and the rest of the cast back at Pinewood.
The other episodes filmed in this way were 'Catacombs of the Moon' (Barbara Bain and Tony Anholt)
with 'The AB Chrysalis' (Martin Landau, Catherine Schell and Nick Tate), 'Space Warp' (Barbara Bain and Nick Tate) with
'A Matter of Balance' (Martin Landau, Catherine Schell and Tony Anholt), and 'Dorzak' (Barbara Bain, Catherine Schell, Tony
Anholt and Nick Tate) with 'Devil's Planet' (Martin Landau).
