Background
The most obvious change in Year Two were amongst the members of the cast.
Martin Landau and Barbara Bain both returned, but Anderson and Freiberger were unable to agree a financial agreement with
Barry Morse. His character was dropped and replaced by a new character, the Psychon metamorph Maya played by Catherine
Schell. Landau and Bain were joined by a second newcomer, Tony Anholt, previously seen as Paul Buchet in Anderson's
'The Protectors' series. Originally, he was to play security officer Simon Hays, but just before filming commenced,
Hays was renamed Tony Verdeschi.
Freiberger had also planned to replace Nick Tate: a new chief Eagle pilot,
Gary Wolusky, was to appear instead of Alan Carter. However, the popularity of Tate and his character had been underestimated by
Freiberger who bowed to pressure from fans and re-hired Tate for Year Two. The Wolusky character had, by this time,
been changed to Mark Macinlock - Tate was signed up so close to the start of principal photography that Carter's role in the
opening episode still appeared as Macinlock on the shooting script.
Other Year One regulars were not so lucky. Prentis Hancock (Paul
Morrow), Clifton Jones (David Kano) and Suzanne Roquette (Tanya Alexander) all disappeared without explanation, as did many
of the actors who had been seen throughout Year One in non-speaking roles as Main Mission personnel - Andrew Dempsey, Loftus
Burton, Michael Stevens and Tony Allyn among them. Anton Philips (Dr Mathias) appeared in the first two episodes but
he found that his role had been reduced to little more that an extra and opted to leave the series. He was replaced
by Jeffrey Kissoon as Dr Ben Vincent.
Zienia Merton (Sandra Benes) returned to appear in 11 Year Two episodes,
but was occasionally replaced by a new character, Yasko Nugami, played by Yasuko Nagazumi, previously seen as Suki in the
first season of 'The Protectors'. Also appearing for the first time in Year Two was Eagle pilot Bill Fraser, played
by John Hug. Johnny Byrne's script 'Biological Soul' was rewritten to include the new characters and bacame 'The Biological
Computer' before eventually going before the cameras on Monday, January 26th 1976 as 'The Metamorph'.
