Background

The shooting script for 'War Games' was completed on October 15th, 1974.

Initially, ITC New York vetoed the script because it killed off most of the cast, only changing theor opinion when the storyline was explained.

Filming on the episode began on Thursday October 24th.

The Mark Nine Hawk was a design collaboration between Brian Johnson and Martin Bower and was produced in three different sizes, thirty-one, sixteen and five inch examples, assembled from a mixture of readily available construction kits in conjuntion with carved wood and plastic card.

In order to save money, various  pieces of stock footage were used.  Eagles taking off from Alpha and flying towards the planet are from 'Guardian of Piri', a Moonbase building exploding is from 'Force of Life' and astronauts running towards the Travel Tube is from 'Voyager's Return'.

Photographic cut-out Eagles were used, both when on the launch pad and substituted for in-flight models.

The two aliens, played by Anthony Valentine and Isla Blair, could not say their dialogue without breaking down in fits of laughter.  Eventually they had to face away from each other to complete their scenes.

The Alphan hand-held laser makes its first appearence.

The stairs leading to the underground shelters are the steps leading to the balcony on the Main Mission set.

When on the planet Helena Russell wears the same robe she wore in the triton void in the episode 'Ring Around the Moon'.
